You know you’re healthy when…your spice cabinet is fuller than your medicine cabinet 😉
Six years ago, I owned exactly 4 spices: onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. I didn’t know how to cook a thing from scratch. I was living on Lean Cuisine Meals, Slim Fast bars, diet soda and sugar-free chewing gum. If I “cooked,” it was things like Hamburger Helper or noodles with Velveeta melted on them. Oh, and some canned corn or green beans.
It honestly never occured to me that what I was putting in my mouth could’ve been contributing to my Fibromyalgia suffering, and my medicine cabinet was loaded with over-the-counter and prescription medications. I took many pills each day and tried all different kinds, but nothing really helped.
What did help me was reducing/eliminating the following things from my life: processed foods, medications, fragrances and chemicals (e.g, perfumes, hair spray, air fresheners).
Now I feel GREAT!
Do I ever get sick of cooking everything at home from scratch? You bettcha! Do I get bummed out about the constantly overflowing pile of dishes in my sink (and, who am I kidding….on the stove and counter, too!)?? Absolutely!!!
But I wouldn’t trade it for the world!! I feel better than I ever have in my life; I have no more Fibro symptoms; and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Wow, only four spices!? Leaving aside the fact that learning to cook clean and from scratch helped your Fibromyalgia symptoms disappear, I’m so glad you learned to cook with other spices for the sake of your taste buds! 😉
LOL!!! Me, too!!! It’s funny how back then I preferred the taste of restaurant food….now, I much prefer the taste of my own cooking 🙂
I was the same way only I had a few more spices to begin with 🙂 I was diagnosed (after years of eating poorly) with Scleroderma, a rare auto-immune disease. The Dr.s wanted to put me on Chemo and I elected to combat it with diet instead. It is now a year later and I am doing much better. So much so that my Dr.s are studying what I am doing to help other patients. ALL with whole foods (GAPS diet) prepared in a simple, traditional manner.
Laura, What is the GAPS diet?
Gut and psychology syndrome. My sister is reading a great book on it! It’s essentially whole foods avoiding additives. Avoiding of inflammatory foods and other things. Quite interesting
I feel your pain with dishes!!!…My spice cupboard is packed and my dishes overflow…But my health is GOOD NOW!!! I HATE DISHES!!!
Ditto for me 🙂
I love this post Christy!! I can’t wait for the day my spices will out number my pills!
Christy,
I heard your story yesterday on the KFAB Omaha, NE radio show and was totally glued to listening to you. I now am printing off all the info in order to share it with my best friend who has suffered with Fibromyalgia for over 30 yrs. Nothing has helped after millions of tests, drugs, heartache, anger, depression, etc. I hope she will consider changing her diet per your advice, hard work and experience. Thank you so much for trying to educate us. I for one am grateful.
Thanks so much for tuning in and for passing the info along to your friend. I’m sure you would LOVE for her to feel better, and I sincerely hope that she finds the answers that will work for her 🙂
