15 Signs that You are a “REAL Foodie”

Do you ever feel a little bit “different” because of your affection for real, natural foods?

Perhaps we should take a little time out from time to time to laugh at ourselves a bit from the perspective of those who aren’t quite so “into” this sort of thing.

After all, for the most part they think we’re nuts (and in my case, they really aren’t too far off – hee, hee!).

So, here are a few “red flags” that you’re a full-fledged “foodie”…just in case you thought you were fooling anyone.

15 Signs that You are a “REAL Foodie”

  1. Your fridge is full of mason jars.
  2. You never leave home without a cooler.
  3. You know how to pronounce “Quinoa.”
  4. Only a small percentage of your food comes from the grocery store.
  5. You know which weeds in your yard are edible.
  6. Your house guests can’t identify most of what’s in your pantry.
  7. Your favorite foods are illegal.
  8. You store a bin full of worms in your kitchen (or any place in your home).
  9. You LOVE bees.
  10. You eat vegetables without Ranch dip.
  11. You’ve ever contemplated the temperature at which foods (besides meat) should be considered “raw.”
  12. The last time you went to a movie theater was to see “Food, Inc.”
  13. People look confused – sometimes horrified – when they see what you’re eating.
  14. Your blender cost more than $300.
  15. The main ingredient in your favorite “mixed drink” is green…and leafy!

From Pain to Purpose: My Journey from Fibromyalgia to Food

“Fibromyalgia” stole several years of my life. In 2002 (at age 25), my health began to deteriorate. I was extremely weak and fatigued, and I was in so much pain that some days it was all I could do to get out of bed. Among other symptoms, I suffered from digestive distress, sleep disturbances, chest pain, and an intermittent racing heart beat. After more than 15 different prescription medications, never-ending appointments with various specialists and more than a handful of diagnostic procedures, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

I was in constant pain – many days it was too painful even to hug my own husband. On good days, I felt like I was 90 years old. On bad days, I felt like I should be in the hospital. I was in pure misery, suffering from an “invisible illness” for which there was no treatment, no cure and no known cause. In 2005, after much consideration, I resigned – I resigned from my position as Executive Director of the after-school program that I adored, and I resigned myself to the medical “fact” that I would suffer with chronic, untreatable pain for the rest of my life. (Click here if you’d like to read about my illness and recovery in much more detail.)

Fortunately, in 2007 I stumbled upon some books that changed my life forever. Among other things, I learned that there are ingredients in processed foods (e.g., high-fructose corn syrup, MSG, artificial colors/sweeteners) that are making people sick and are often hidden on food labels under innocent-sounding ingredient names like “natural flavor” and “yeast extract.” This information made such an impact on my husband and me that we immediately purged our kitchen of convenience foods and mystery ingredients. We started eating only those foods which we could clearly identify as having come from a plant or animal in nature. And in just a couple of months, ALL of my Fibromyalgia symptoms were gone – completely gone! In fact, I now feel better and have more energy than most people I know!

It sounds so silly, but I never realized before just how good we should all feel. We should sleep well, feel great and have all of the energy we need to do all of the things we want to do. Each of us deserves that! People need a wake-up call – we truly are what we eat, and we need to make a conscious decision about what we are putting into our bodies. I’m not saying we need to spend half of our paychecks on obscure berries from distant lands; but we do need to stop eating FAKE food and return to eating things that are grown in nature rather than invented in a lab.

The Standard American diet is destroying our health! Meanwhile, we are bombarded with unhealthy messages and advertisements for junk food; and eating has been turned into such a “rocket science” that it’s no wonder folks feel defeated before they even get to the grocery store. Low fat? Low calories? High protein? Biggest meal at night? Biggest meal at breakfast? It’s enough to drive a person insane! Unfortunately, what most experts fail to advise is that what matters most is what’s in the ingredients list of what we eat!

Even when folks come to the realization that processed food is bad, they often have no idea how to make changes or what to eat instead! So I have dedicated my life to teaching people how to read ingredients labels, how to shop for and prepare REAL foods, how to use various kitchen equipment, etc.

I know that these changes aren’t easy and there are a million-and-one “reasons” why you “can’t” do it. Believe me! Just five years ago, I was eating fast food, candy, diet pop and frozen dinners. I was the stereotypical American “junk food junkie.” Unless I needed to lose a few pounds – then I was a calorie-conscious crash dieter. (I used to think that calories, carbs and fat grams were all that mattered and that if I wasn’t overweight, then I had nothing to be worried about. Boy was I wrong!!!) Five years ago, I had no idea how to cook! I was also battling a chronic illness and suffering from extreme fatigue, weakness and pain. So, if I can make these changes, anyone can!! There is nothing special about me that somehow made it easier for me to make these changes. After all, I hate doing dishes just as much as anyone else! It’s just a conscious decision that each of us must make – basically, you just have to want to change more than you want to stay the same.

This may sound cliché, but I know that everything happens for a reason. While suffering with Fibromyalgia, it was really hard to see any purpose in the pain. Now, I realize that I suffered for those years so that I could educate and inspire others to take charge of their diets and their health. So many people are so apathetic about what goes into their bodies – I was, too! Eating really shouldn’t be this complicated, and it is unfortunate that things have gotten to this point. It isn’t fair that food companies are allowed to add harmful ingredients to the food on unsuspecting consumers’ plates, and I am determined to do what I can to help people become more aware and make the necessary changes!

Although my particular symptoms were diagnosed as “Fibromyalgia,” you could insert countless other health conditions and get this same story and solution; and I’ve witnessed the transformation in many other people with a variety of ailments and diagnoses throughout the years. So if you’re still eating processed foods, I truly hope that you will consider this information and begin making changes in your own life.

Top 10 Lessons from a City Girl’s Garden

Please don’t let these picture fool you. Yes, this is my garden. But, no, gardening does not come naturally to me…at all. I envy the folks who just seem to have a knack for it. I suppose you could say I learn things “the hard way” – I’ve pretty much learned all that I know about gardening by losing crops and then frantically checking in with Google (or one of my human friends) for an explanation and, hopefully, a solution.

And, honestly, I’m truly more in love with the idea of having a garden than with the process of gardening itself. Perhaps some of you can relate? I guess you could call me a “gardener of circumstance.” It’s not that I have a green thumb or just can’t get enough of wading around in mud, pulling weeds, and being eaten alive by mosquitoes. Heck no! I am a C-I-T-Y girl through and through! I have just developed a deep appreciation for real, organic foods…and growing these things myself is the cheapest (and freshest) way to go!

Following are the Top 10 Lessons that I’ve learned, so far, from my extensive (cough, cough!) gardening “career.” Do you have any tips you’d like to share with me? Please leave a comment below!

Top 10 Lessons from a City Girl’s Garden

10. Bees are our friends. Without them many plants would never produce fruit. They are not to be feared…regardless of how afraid of them you may have been raised to be because you grew up with a mother who was terrified that they might buzz around and get all tangled up in her very long, very thick hair!! (Thanks, mom!)

9. Plant your garden where you can see it and enjoy it (and, thus, where you’ll be less likely to forget about it or neglect it). Just be sure the space you choose gets 6 (preferably 8-10) good hours of sun per day! There’s no law that says your garden must be tucked away out of sight in a back corner of your yard. Seriously, why do people do this?? I for one am way too lazy to walk all the way back there; and I greatly enjoy having a lovely view of my garden right from my kitchen window!

8. Cute, fluttery little white moths are not our friends. Ditto for tiny little green worms. And critters that look like cute little yellowish-green lady bugs should not be treated as such! They must die, too! (Sorry folks, no one said this was gonna be pretty!)

7. Plant your garden out of reach of any male dogs. Veggies taste best when watered by humans!

6. Always plant radishes. They provide instant gratification because they grow very quickly. Even if you don’t eat them—just grow them and give them away. They’re pretty dummy-proof, so you’ll feel successful even if the rest of your garden dies.

5. Fake rubber snakes placed strategically around your garden will deter birds, but the birds will eventually realize their “fakeness” if you don’t move them around from time to time! Or perhaps birds just don’t fear snakes they presume to be dead?! Either way, you lose!

4. If you’re the type of city girl who doesn’t enjoy little spiders and things crawling on your kitchen counter, it may behoove you to give your garden-fresh veggies a quick rinse outdoors before bringing them inside! Trust me!

3. When entering your garden, always wave your arms around in front of you at eye level before walking between tall plants. Yes, you will look like a freakin’ maniac. But, on the bright side, you won’t end up with spider webs stuck to your face!

2. Never! I repeat…NEVER let bunnies know how cute you secretly think they are. They will use this weakness against you and nibble your plants down to nubs! Ignore their convincing little pleas and promises, and erect a fence…pronto!

1. Make friends with every gardener you meet – especially if they have a HUGE garden! Sure, they may be great folks and you might enjoy their company, but that’s really beside the point. Chances are they will have extra food they’ll need to give away at some point. Which brings me to…City Girl’s Garden Lesson #1: Never grow for yourself what others will grow for you for free!

Tour of Chad & Christy’s Gardens – June 13, 2012

Picking peas taller than me!

We are so grateful to have enough land for two large gardens at our home right in the middle of the city, and we just LOVE bringing our harvest straight to our dinner table! I thought I’d take a minute to share some photos of what’s growing in our gardens, so far, this season. I’d love to hear what you are growing, too, so leave a comment  below to tell me about your growing adventure!

Our gardens have changed a lot since we dug our first hole just five short years ago. That first season, our garden consisted of only a few tomato and pepper plants we purchased at a local farmers market. The following year, we built four 4’x4′ raised beds and grew a variety of vegetables using the methods of Square Foot Gardening. We loved it so much that by the end of the season, we built 3 more beds – and started growing our own plants from seeds! You can check out that garden of ours by clicking here! The following year (last year), we moved to a new house with much more land, and we created the “Main Garden” pictured above. This year, we expanded to the other side of our property and planted an additional, slightly smaller garden (as you’ll see below).
