SIMPLY SOUP & 4F FARMS
We are Rebecka and Allen Fleischman. We have a 40-acre farm northwest of Tekamah, Nebraska. We are located about half-way between Omaha, NE, and Sioux City, IA. We live on the farm my husband was born on. We have 4 children and 2 grandchildren. We have currently have 8 acres of garden and dehydrate many different kinds of vegetables into 9 different soup mixes, dehydrated herbs and veggies. Hard red wheat is stone-ground weekly for flour. I started dehydrating and making my own soup mixes after getting sick about 5 years ago. We were looking to get away from processed foods, but missed the convenience. We currently grow most of our own vegetables, get most of our fruits locally, stone-grind wheat for flour, milk goats, raise chickens, sheep and meat goats. Every month I try to introduce a new self-sufficiency skill to our lifestyle. I offer lessons on beginning dehydrating, open-kettle and pressure-cooker canning, freezing, wheat grinding, and simple cheese making. Tours of our farm are available by appointment. We offer fresh grown produce, goats and sheep for meat. We also offer nine different soup mixes and currently working on converting three more. All of our soup mixes are free of preservatives, MSG, & salt. Each soup mix makes approximately 3-4 quarts. All mixes appropriate for the Vegetarian lifestyle. All mixes, except Chicken Noodle & Minestrone, are appropriate for the Vegan lifestyle. Black Bean, Vegetable and Lentil are appropriate for those with Gluten intolerance. Several wheat-based mixes are also available. We stone grind hard red wheat berries weekly (or as needed) for these mixes. All of our mixes are family favorites and are eaten by our family and friends. Each mix has been developed over time with nutrition and convenience in mind. Shipping is available for an additional charge.

STRAIGHT ARROW BISON

TALL GRASS BISON
Tall Grass Bison, the largest bison producer in Iowa, maintains their herd of over 300 grass-fed bison on 1000 acres “as close to natural conditions as possible.” The animals are free-range and graze on native prairie grasses; no corn or other grains are fed. Herds are managed for natural family order, an evolutionary development that minimizes stress, the precursor of pathogens, illness and tough meat. Healthy stress-free lives mean they have never needed nor been given a shot or antibiotics in their life. Humane slaughter in the field eliminates the unnecessary stress of being transported to a slaughterhouse. Meat is dry-aged for 21 days and processed at a State Inspected locker. Bison meat is available in front quarters, hind quarters and hanging halves. Tall Grass Bison, Bob Jackson, 1858 220th Street, Promise City IA 52583. (641) 874-5794. E-mail: tgbison@iowatelecom.net

Nathan, I’d highly recommend joining our “Omaha Area Natural Foodies” Facebook page, and possibly post this comment there, as well. There are many farmers/gardeners/producers in the group who may reach out to you – https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/147653388649328/?fref=ts
Best wishes to you on this journey,
Christy
I would very much like to become intimately involved with the local gardening community and have been trying to get plugged in. I’m currently working full time and going to school full time but my goal is that of constant learning. Essentially becoming an apprentice of basic life skills in an effort to “train the trainer” least we forget how to survive as efficient, close knit communities. Our current way of life is unsustainable and we are running out of time to research and develop real methods of change towards true sustainability.
